Lawn renovation
This is an area where we can save you lots of money. We often see lawns that are ripped up and replaced with new turf where the lawn has suffered from one or more conditions. Before we do this, we should consider why it is necessary. In all likelihood the new turf will follow the same path unless it is well cared for.
In cases where too much thatch is the problem, then it is likely that removal of the turf is going to be the best option. No amount of scarifying will sort this problem out, and the use of biological thatcheaters can take too long. We have seen lawns replaced because of hydrophobic dry patch (see lawn diseases) with the result being that we try to grow new turf on contaminated soil. Most turf layers will not recognise this condition and carry on regardless.
I the vast majority of cases a tired lawn can be renovated by overseeding with a more suitable grass species. It is carried out using a machine which creates grooves in the soil and buries the seed. This improves germination potential and discourages birds.
Top dressing
This is another useful operation and involves the application of a soil based dressing which can improve the health of any lawn. There are many types of dressings available and adding one with some organic material to a sandy soil will improve the biology in the soil, and therefore its ability to process nutrients.
