Spring start

With Spring just around the corner you should start to think about getting that first cut done. Don’t be too concerned that there may be a little surface moisture. Adjust the cutting height so that you are just trimming off the areas of higher growth. If you have a rotary mower then even better. These are capable of dealing with a little moisture on the leaves as the rotating action effectively removes this moisture. With cylinder mowers it is a little more tricky, but if the blades are sharp and well set then, as long as you are not trying to remove too much, it should cope reasonably well. It can be a case of trial and error, start high and gradually work down. Generally people stop cutting their lawns far too early, and start again far to late. The longer the grass, the more moisture it will hold, and cutting then becomes difficult, either wet or dry. So getting in the habit of cutting regularly, so that it doesn’t get to that stage is well worth doing. Remember grass will start growing again as soon as the soil temperature reaches 6 deg so get ready.

Leaves

Keeping your lawn free of leaves is a vital part of winter work. Coverings of leaves stop light and air reaching the grass plant and promote disease.

Waterlogging

Most lawns are suffering from waterlogging at the moment. Machine work is on hold until this situation changes.
